You can relax in guestrooms with simple yet warm interiors inspired by the culture of northern Europe but mirroring the city’s own distinctive blend of Western and Japanese styles.Come relive the days when Hakodate was one of the most important towns in Japan. Hakodate's remarkable history, diverse culture, and multicultural cuisine await you in the gentle embrace of the Nipponia Hotel Hakodate Port Town.
Hakodate was one of the first port towns to open to the Western world as Japan stepped out of the feudal era and into the modern age. The influx of different cultures that followed the opening of the port gave the city its unique look, a mix of Japanese and Western aesthetics and architectures. As a result, Hakodate was said to have one of the three most beautiful night views in the world, on a par with those of Hong Kong and Naples. Today, the city is even more fascinating, attracting lovers of history, hot springs, or amazing food to this scenic corner of Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island.
Hakodate was once the gateway to Japan for travelers from all over the world, and it can be the same for you today. Let the port town be your base for discovering the many wonders of Hokkaido, like its capital, Sapporo. Not only is the city the home of the world-famous Sapporo Snow Festival that has been held every February since 1950, it is also a mecca for foodies and nature lovers.
But if it’s snow you’re looking for, you’ll want to check out the slopes of nearby Niseko, one of the top ski destinations in the world. And those visiting Hokkaido outside the winter months simply must not miss the lavender fields of Furano or Biei’s Blue Pond, said to shimmer like a giant sapphire.
Hakodate's old warehouses are symbolic of the area’s history as a once prosperous trading center. However, despite their historical value and their location in a bustling tourist destination, the warehouses have long fallen into disuse.VMG believes that cultural assets need to be used by people in order to truly shine.
That’s why we proposed the renovation of the red-brick buildings our goal being to offer a journey into the region's timeless history and culture enriched by the highest level of Japanese hospitality. By preserving parts of the original structures and augmenting them with modern comforts and technologies, Nipponia Hotel Hakodate Port Town brings this scenic part of Hokkaido into the future while honoring its past.
The mortar on the exterior of the warehouses has been scraped away, and the original bricks have been exposed and restored on both the exterior and interior to more clearly reveal the history of Hakodate. At the turn of the twentieth century, red-clay bricks were found in many structures in Japan, primarily in government and public buildings. Based on German architecture, the distinctive crimson buildings quickly became a symbol of Japanese modernization, with the Hakodate warehouses standing at the very forefront of the movement.
The warm and simple harmony of preserved wood and exposed red bricks welcomes guests to a cozy space serenaded by the soft lapping of the waves in Hakodate’s harbor.
They can also enjoy Hakodate beer, a product of the great brewing culture of Hokkaido, or a variety of bottled drinks and snacks available in the minibar in each room.
Nipponia Hotel Hakodate Port Town’s nine guestrooms are divided into three grades: the VMG Grand Twin (forty square meters), the VMG Comfort Twin (thirty-six square meters), and the VMG Comfort Hollywood Twin (thirty-five square meters). All rooms have private baths and minimalist lighting that enhances their calm ambience.

Suitable for birthdays, family celebrations, and other joyous events, the hotel dining room delights guests not just with its French-style dishes made from local ingredients, such as Hakodate beef and fresh Hokkaido seafood, but also with its chic d écor of exposed and restored red bricks.
